Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken

If you notice any of these, a spring has most likely broken. Please stop using the door and give us a call.

Loud bang from the garage

A sharp snap is often the moment a spring breaks.

Door won't open

The opener hums or strains, and the door lifts only a few inches or not at all.

Door feels very heavy

Lifting it by hand is much harder than normal, or it slams back down.

Visible gap in the spring

A break in the coil above the door, or a spring hanging loose beside the track.

Is it safe to use the door with a broken spring?

No. Springs carry the weight of your door, which can be 150 to 300 lbs. Please don't lift the door by hand or keep running the opener. Don't touch the spring, cables, or brackets. They hold a lot of tension and can cause serious injury. Call us and we'll fix it safely.

Which Type of Spring Does Your Door Have?

Photo of torsion spring to be added

Torsion spring

A tightly wound coil on a bar above the door. Common on newer homes and heavier doors.

Extension springs

Two long springs, one along each side of the door. Common on older homes and lighter doors.

Not sure? Describe it on the call or text us a photo.

What is a torsion spring?

A torsion spring is a coil that winds up as your door closes and stores energy. When you open the door, it unwinds and releases that energy, doing most of the lifting for you. That's why even a heavy door can feel light in your hands.

Why many homeowners prefer torsion springs

Longer lasting:

Fewer parts, and the coil twists instead of stretching, so it wears more slowly.

Smoother:

The door moves evenly, with less shaking and less strain on the tracks.

Safer:

The spring wraps around a bar, so it stays in place if it breaks. A broken extension spring can snap loose if it has no safety cable.

Can I switch from extension springs to torsion springs?

Yes, in most cases. A conversion replaces your side springs with a torsion spring and bar above the door. We check your door at your free in-home estimate and give you the price before we start.

Should You Replace One Spring or Both?

Replace both

Most doors use two springs that share the weight of the door. They wear out at about the same rate, so when one breaks the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at once keeps the door balanced, protects your opener, and saves you a second visit. If your door has only one spring, we replace that one.

What Spring Replacement Costs

Most spring replacements cost between $250 and $600, depending on your door size, the type of spring, and whether we replace one or both. You get a clear price in person at your free in-home estimate, and you approve it before we start.

Every spring replacement includes:

New 15,000-cycle springs
Labor
Balancing and testing the door
Lubricating moving parts
Cleanup

Door Acting Up? Check These 5 Things First

  1. Dirty or blocked safety sensors: If your door closes partway and goes back up, wipe both small sensors near the floor and clear anything in front of them.
  2. Remote batteries: If the remote does nothing, try fresh batteries or use the wall button.
  3. Track problems: Look for dents, dirt, or objects in the tracks. A door that shakes or sticks may be off track.
  4. Lock setting: If the opener runs but the door won't move, check that the wall button's lock mode isn't turned on.
  5. Springs and cables: Look above the door for a gap in the spring or a loose cable. Don't touch them. Call us.

Still stuck? Call (954) 770-1344 and we'll help you figure it out.

Common Questions

Is it safe to open a garage door with a broken spring?
Please don't. A door with a broken spring is very heavy, and forcing it can hurt you or damage the opener. Call us and a technician will handle it safely.
Should I replace one spring or both?
Both, if your door has two. They wear at the same rate, so replacing both keeps the door balanced and avoids a second visit.
How much does spring replacement cost?
Most cost between $250 and $600, depending on door size and spring type. You get the exact price at your free in-home estimate.

Do you offer same-day service?
Yes. Call us and we'll send a technician as soon as possible, often the same day.
How long do garage door springs last?

What's the difference between torsion and extension springs?
A torsion spring is a coil on a bar above the door. Extension springs run along both side tracks. We repair both.
